Having trouble with the lock on your new organics cart? We’ve heard there are questions about how the lock works. Here’s what you need to know: The “key” doesn’t come out.
1. The lock may look like it has a removable key, but it is designed to stay in place. Simply turn it to lock or unlock the cart.
2. The lock opens automatically during collection. The lock is gravity-activated and is designed to release when the cart is tipped by the collection truck, allowing the lid to open and the contents to be emptied.
3. You can test it yourself. Tip the cart upside down. The lid should release when the cart reaches the appropriate position.
Lock sticking? Try leaving the cart in the sun with the lid closed. Afterwards, open and firmly close the lid several times. This can help the lid settle into position and resolve minor sticking issues.
Still experiencing issues? Submit a service request and County staff will investigate. Report a waste cart issue.
